About Me
Emphasis on colour and texture was taught to me at a young age by my mother, who constantly pointed out the magical colour combinations of our eastern Quebec landscape. She also taught me to sew.
I bring this experience of colour into my work and find that the medium of fiber gives my work added emotional content, evoked by the collective memory of Grandma’s quilt.
A new exploration for me has been the old fashion braided rug technique, diving even deeper into churning colour combinations and textures. I don’t stick with the traditional wool fabrics, I use whatever I can get my hands on. Used fibers are abundant in our culture and this is an amazing way to use them. Bringing these creations into basket form gives me the impression of creating vessels almost using my sewing machine like a potter’s wheel.
While I was earning my Bachelors’ Degree in Psychology at the University of Ottawa in 92, I apprenticed in a drapery shop where I acquired more technical aspects of sewing, becoming familiar with custom blind making and other structured drapery arrangements, from the NAC to the Governor General’s Ballroom.
In 1995, I began making hats and other functional art pieces, selling them through various Ottawa boutiques and art venues. I started quilting a few years later and have exhibited my work in Ontario, Quebec and Poland. I have exhibited at Art in the Park (June, Central Park, Ottawa) where I served as entertainment coordinator for 2 years and as site coordinator for another 2 years. I also exhibited at Art in the Hall (Glebe Community Centre, Ottawa) and was publicity coordinator.
